Bookbinding: A Comprehensive Guide to Folding, Sewing & Binding is an excellent find for those interested in book publishing. It’s less a how-to guide and more a reference Bible for different types of book design and production options. The most refreshing aspect of Bookbinding is it’s organization and presentation, all done in an intelligent, design savvy way. The black and white photographs in the book make the most of lighting and shadow density to give the viewer a sense of shape and scale while the flow charts move you through the different steps of production.
I especially enjoy how the authors categorize and rate the different bookbinding styles, singling out the positive and negatives aspects of each choice in relation to cost, time, environmental impact, and more. There is also a fantastic glossary in the back defining a wide range of terms related to the craft. Not only is Bookbinding an essential resource, it’s also a beautiful object in itself.
